This work explores the journey towards amphibious living. It draws together several short broadcasts that become different focal areas as in a shipping weather report. These unusual broadcasts see the sailor, who is losing signal to the weather station, reporting back from sea. At a slippery intersection, the loss of radio signal meets the rise of an ever present static as the sailor slowly becomes jumbled by — and infiltrated into — the watery surrounds.
The Lonesome Sailors collective formed at the height of Covid-19 restrictions in 2020, through an experiment called Virtual Blackout. This played with the form of theatre-making for the virtual National Arts Festival. Animator and artist Meghan Judge was selected as lead, and then teamed up with scenographer and puppeteer Craig Leo, after which several theatre practitioners came on board, namely Baeletsi Tsatsi, Roberto Pombo and Rob Murray. Craig Leo brought in the Ukwanda Puppets and Design Art Collective (consisting of Luyanda Nogodlwana, Sipho Ngxola and Siphokazi Mphofu). Robin Kirsten filmed the puppet scenes. Together, over an intensive two-week period, this group produced works that reflected much of the psychological and speculative landscape of the Covid moment.
