‘Lumen Vitae’ (Light of Life in Latin) explores the profound symmetry between the human body and the cosmos. Two circles of light pulse within one another – an inner orb embraced by a larger one – evoking both a blazing sun and a living cell. This duality speaks to universal geometry that connects all existence: from nuclei to galaxies, life unfolds in cycles and spirals that bind everything together.
Before the glowing form stands a cone that invites interaction. When the viewer speaks, their voice subtly stirs the inner light, symbolising the delicate exchange between the self and the universe. The work reminds us that while we shape our inner worlds, we remain part of a greater rhythm – inseparable from nature’s design. Lumen Vitae becomes a meditation and a mirror, a luminous reflection of connection, resonance and the infinite patterns that unite all living things.
Kunye Colab is a collective of young, emerging artists mentored by imagineer Dirk Durnez and light creator/specialist Marc Machtelinckx. After nearly four decades working internationally in themed construction, edutainment and art, Kunye was created to share the founder’s 43 years international experience and know-how with the next generation of creators. The initiative provides young artists with studio space, residencies and support in production of art projects and products – empowering them to create ambitious works otherwise beyond reach.
Rooted in the isiXhosa word “Kunye”, meaning “together”, the collective embodies unity through art. Their multi-coloured, genderless icon – modelled on Boli and Venus – symbolises the fusion of International and African influences, much like the diverse Kunye Collab team. Kunye champions accessibility, inclusivity and collaboration. Through their work, they celebrate South Africa’s vibrant diversity and affirm that art unites us all.
