Zimbabwean artist Lionel Tazvitya portrays a traditional belief that salt can be used to ward off evil. Lightning can be sent by the gods or orchestrated by people to harm others. Coarse salt must be thrown at the entrance of the house to protect it from danger. The artist uses three types of salt in this project: black for black people, red for lighting and danger, and white for cleansing.
Lionel Tazvitya Mbayiwa was born and educated in Mubaira, Zimbabwe. He attended Nyangwene Primary School and Rio Tinto Mhondoro High School before moving to Harare in 1999.
While he did not attend art school, his older brother, Hugh Hatitye Mbayiwa – an art teacher – taught him and influenced his work.
In 2005, Mbayiwa participated in his first group show at Gallery Delta in Harare, where he exhibited until 2009, and has exhibited at the Zimbabwe National Gallery. He left Zimbabwe for South Africa to seek new opportunities.
