A moment of rest for you and those who can't

Rest is not idleness or wasted time. It is an active process in which one must engage. Rest defies enforced resilience; true rest is a rarity and a political act in a world filled with anxiety of crime and violence, of war, of attention-seeking consumerism.

People live with mental strain particularly in informal settlements, areas of war and famine, unable to truly rest and repair their nervous systems. ‘A moment of rest for you and those who can't’, positioned between the trees near the Eerste Rivier, engages with the notion of rest for those attending and in honour of those who can’t.

The semi-circular structure is designed to guide a slow unveiling of the surrounding landscape. As one approaches, the fabric fins frame the natural setting, offering a changing perspective. Obscuring and revealing the scenes crafts a secluded space for a moment of rest in the soft light.

Stephen van den Heever and Amy Leibbrandt, an archaeologist and architect, keenly contribute to a just society of kindness and generosity with a shared curiosity.

Stephen seeks to play a part in the repatriation of stolen artefacts and has a passion for understanding plant-people relationships through the lens of southern African rock art.

Amy has a deep interest in urban justice, land and housing. She joined the ‘Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrade’ team in 2024 and continues to observe the mental strain of people living in informal settlements. Both are neurodivergent and have an understanding of how intrinsic true rest is to an engaging and resilient life.
